PGWP Eligibility Requirements (2026)

You MUST Have: - Completed a program at a PGWP-eligible DLI - Program was at least 8 months long - Maintained full-time student status (some exceptions) - Received final marks/completion letter - Valid study permit when applying

Program Requirements (Updated 2026) - University degrees: Fully eligible - College diplomas: Must be in eligible field of study - Master's/PhD: Eligible regardless of duration

Ineligible Programs - English/French language courses only - General interest courses - Distance learning (more than 50% online) - Programs at non-PGWP DLIs

Application Timeline

Common Mistakes That Lead to Refusal

1. Applying Late Missing the 180-day window = automatic refusal. No exceptions.

2. Study Permit Expired You must have valid status when applying. If your permit expires: - Apply to extend it BEFORE it expires - Or apply for PGWP before expiry

3. Didn't Maintain Full-Time Status Taking reduced course loads without authorization can disqualify you.

4. Online Learning Violations More than 50% of your program cannot be distance learning (some COVID exceptions).

5. Program Not Eligible Double-check your DLI's PGWP eligibility BEFORE enrolling.

After You Get PGWP

Your PGWP is an OPEN work permit. You can:

  • Work for any employer
  • Work in any location in Canada
  • Change jobs without notifying IRCC
  • Work full-time

Building Toward PR - Gain 1 year of skilled work experience - Take language tests (IELTS/CELPIP) - Apply through Express Entry or PNP - Timeline to PR: 1-2 years after PGWP
